History is full of great gifts, gifts that have stood the test of time and have become legendary through our history. They are the gifts that are known by name, gifts matched not only in their legendary status but also size and originality.
What would you consider to be the two greatest gifts in history? Do mythological gifts count? Do real gifts count? In terms of real gifts, there are two that come first.
Statue of Liberty
As far as gifts go, this may be the biggest in history. To mark the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the French presented this statue to the United States as a gift of friendship. The Americans built the base for the statue, while the statue itself was constructed by the French under the guidance of Frederic Bartholdi.
The trojan Horse
Some gifts seem like gifts, but are in fact, traps. That was the case during the Trojan War when the Greeks built a horse and filled it with Greek warriors before putting it in front of the gates. It was customary in ancient times for a defeated general to surrender his horse, so the symbolic gift of the horse seemed to trojans to be a notice of surrender from the Greeks. The trap worked and the Trojans were defeated because of one of the most cunning military ploys in history.
In terms of mythological or fictional gifts, you can’t beat these two:
Fire
According to Greek mythology, we can thank one god for the gift of fire – Prometheus. Prometheus, who also gave humanity writing, mathematics, agriculture, and medicine, stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humanity. For his betrayal of Zeus, Prometheus was chained to a rock where an eagle came every day to rip out his liver, which grew back every time.
The Gift of the Magi
In this book written in 1906, Jim and Della Dillingham Young are a couple in love, but who can barely afford their apartment. For Christmas, Della buys Jim a chain for his prized pocket watch given to him by his father. She pays for it by cutting off her long hair and selling it to make a wig. Unknown to her, Jim sells his pocket watch to buy her a beautiful set of combs so she can comb her long hair.
The moral in that story, written by William Porter, is that sometimes material possessions are not the greatest gift you can get, and sometimes unselfish love is the greatest of all gifts.

The world pipe and fittings market is set to be worth $152 billion by 2017, driven hugely by the increased demand from key industrial sectors.
Research conducted by Global Industry Analysts (GIA) suggests that whilst the current economic climate has affected the pipes market, the segment should recover in 2013 as the crushing recession in the Eurozone starts to ease.
Furthermore, the increased growth of the market will be driven in particular by the surge in demand for malleable pipe fittings from companies based in the oil and gas, construction, mechanical and automotive engineering, agriculture and irrigation industries, GIA stated.
In the long term, the demand will be further boosted by growing economies who will need stainless steel pipe fittings to help assist them to increase urbanisation and help to develop their economies.
The GIA further indicated that the pipe and fittings market contracted back in 2008 and 2009 due to the global recession and decreases in infrastructure spending.
Despite the contractions in the market, the market redoubled in 2010 as countries increased their capital spending.
With the market set to be worth $152 billion in the next five years, increased demand will be seen particularly in the water and sanitation industry.
“A combination of greater government emphasis on irrigation, strong private sector participation in water supply projects, and improved multi-lateral lending for water-related sectors presents huge potential in this segment,” the GIA study stated.
Moreover, increases in world energy requirements will help increase demand for pipes, which will lead to the establishment of new oil and gas infrastructure.
In the construction and automotive industry, it is predicted that high-grade pipes will be demanded by companies for the safe operation of machines and vehicles.
The report further stated that of all global markets, Europe is the largest market for pipe and fittings in terms of demand.
Despite Europe being the best market, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, both developing economies will be vital in helping to drive demand for the industry.
The report further added: “Underlying pipe demand from emerging markets will be fuelled by spending on infrastructure projects such as sewage treatment, water distribution/supply and electrification.”

There is a grand jury consisting of Dr Kannan, Dr Vineetha Menon, Dr RVG Menon, Nirmala Sanu George and Heli, and the 1223 Panchayats, the Corporations and the Municipalities of Kerala will get immense publicity. It has received 250 entries so far from the residents of Kerala. A whopping 213,000 USD will be awarded to the best Corporation, Panchyath and Municipality, after 100 days of intense competition. Projects will be selected and there will be video documentation. The leaders of Panchayats who are selected will have to answer the learned Jurys questions. The august assembly or audience can vote via text messages.
By Green is meant Sustainable Agriculture, Organic Farming, water conservation, health, food and social security, eco friendly homes, atmospheric non pollution, education, energy, housing and womens empowerment, in a land burdened by overpopulation and scarce resources.
There are some good examples like a village that renounced pesticides for Organic Farming. Waste was converted into biofuel by one villages initiative , and another village replaced incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs. Another village used Bio Gas for cooking on a large scale. Another village which solved its potable water problem was highlighted. Due to the Matsya Kerala ( Fish Kerala ) Program, another village led in fish production The Panchayaths distribute fish feed and small fish free of cost and the fish tanks become productive tanks. One fish farmer reported getting aid from Panchayat and got INR 200 bucks per kilo fish, after seven months of breeding fish. ( India with 7 million tonnes of fish production lags behind Chinas 49 million. 50% of Indias production is from inland farming or Aquaculture ). Poverty alleviation and rural sustainability are the needs of the hour.
The Green Initiative is spreading worldwide and will sweep the world.
Education or Wisdom is great and is the teacher of teachers ( Vidya Guroonam Guru ). It is time India invested in R & D in Agri and educated her people about both Bio Technology and Organic Farming and the necessity of keeping the land green and improved her agri infrastructure. Now there is an awakening and 32 lakh trees were planted initially. 2000 trees were planted at the Trichur Medical College Healing Garden and 200 gooseberry seedlings were planted by Oushadi, the states Ayurvedic arm at the nearby Santhvana Vana. More than 10 million trees will be planted in Kerala ! Let us hope that the Green Initiative taken by highly literate Kerala will be followed by other states.
I hope they include Bio Dynamics and Astro Meteorology as part of Organic Farming, which is a part of traditional wisdom.
